Introduction

The University of Sassari Postgraduate Course in Archaeological Heritage was established starting from the A.A. 2010-2011. It is based in the city of Oristano, in the center of Sardinia, where there is a university campus of the University of Cagliari and the University of Sassari.

The aim of the Postgraduate Course is the training of specialists with a specific professional profile in the field of protection, enhancement, management and use of the cultural and archaeological heritage inherent in the archeology of the Mediterranean and Atlantic islands in all chronological dimensions (Antiquity, Middle Ages and Post-Middle Ages). Its full name is, in fact, "Nesiotikà - Insulae Maris Nostri et Externi" Postgraduate Course in Archeological Heritage, precisely to draw more clearly the geographical areas referred to in the training path, namely the Mediterranean (the islands of the Mare Nostrum) and the Atlantic of the Iberian Peninsula and Morocco (the Maria Externi).

The educational offer of the Course is divided into 4 curricula, one of which provides a double course:

  1. Prehistoric and Protohistoric Archeology
  2. Classical Archeology (standard course and underwater archeology course)
  3. Late-ancient and medieval archeology
  4. Eastern Archeology

The program of the Postgraduate Course in Archaeological Heritage provides for the acquisition of 120 credits (university credits). Through seminars held by internationally renowned teachers and practical experiences on archeological excavation, the student can train and acquire specific skills in the various theoretical and practical fields whose leitmotif will therefore be the archeology of the islands in relation to Mediterranean cultures.

Extremely innovative is the training course in underwater archeology and coastal landscapes, so far unique in the Italian landscape, where topics related to the methodology of archaeological research of underwater deposits, to the musealisation and relative enhancement of coastal and submerged contexts and history will be the subject of interest. of navigation and commerce from prehistory to the Middle Ages.

History

The University of Sassari has established the Postgraduate Course in Archaeological Heritage at the jeweled site of Oristano in 2010-2011 by activating the course on underwater archeology, under the agreement between the University and the UNO Consortium, a strategic choice in function of the natural vocation of the territory of the province of Oristano.

Following the academic year 2011-2012 the terrestrial route was inaugurated, with the activation of prehistoric, classical, medieval and oriental curricula.

Title issued

At the end of the training course the Diploma of Specialization in Archaeological Heritage will be issued.

Study plan and teaching organization

The scientific-disciplinary sectors prepared by MIUR are presented in this Postgraduate Course through innovative aspects of the research and application of technologies to Cultural Heritage.
The courses are divided into 5 main areas, for a total of 70 CFU. Each member must acquire credits for the courses of the first three areas and one chosen from the fourth to the fifth.

175 hours of lessons are scheduled with compulsory attendance divided into didactic blocks of one to two weeks per month, from Monday to Friday. Further training activities are also included in the program, organized in three areas: archeological excavation, heritage management and others practical activities for a total of another 375 hours for each year (15 ECTS). At the end of each course evaluation tests are scheduled

Prerequisites

To be admitted at the School of Specialization in Archaeological Heritage you have to pass a public competition based on qualifications and exams. You must have obtained the second-level degree in Archeology (2/S or LM-2 classes).

Also eligible for the competition are those who hold a four-year degree obtained according to the regulations prevailing in Ministerial Decree n. 509/1999, which is equivalent to the second-level degree (2/S or LM-2 classes): Degree in Arts, Degree in Conservation of Cultural Heritage , Degree in Oriental Languages ​​and Civilizations, Degree in History and Conservation of Cultural Heritage.

It is also essential to have acquired a minimum of 90 credits in the specific disciplinary area, "Knowledge and contextualization of archaeological heritage".

For students admitted to the School and not residents in the province of Oristano, the UNO Consortium, in correspondence with the didactic activities, guarantees free accommodation at an affiliated structure in Oristano.
